A Comparative and Fault-tolerance Study of the Use of N-grams with Polyphonic Music

چکیده
In this paper we investigate the retrieval performance of monophonic queries made on a polyphonic music database using the n-gram approach for full-music indexing. The pitch and rhythm dimensions of music are used, and the musical words (a term coined by Downie [2]) generated enable text retrieval methods to be used with music retrieval. We outline an experimental framework for a comparative and fault-tolerance study of various n-gramming strategies and encoding precision using six experimental databases. For monophonic queries we focus in particular on query-by-humming (QBH) systems. Error models addressed in several QBH studies are surveyed for the fault-tolerance study. Our experiments show that different ngramming strategies and encoding precision differ widely in their effectiveness. We present the results of our comparative and faulttolerance study on a collection of 5380 polyphonic music pieces encoded in the MIDI format.

Position Indexing of Adjacent and Concurrent N-Grams for Polyphonic Music Retrieval
In this paper we examine the retrieval performance of adjacent and concurrent n-grams generated from polyphonic music data. We deploy a method to index polyphonic music using a word position indexer with the n-gram approach. Using all possible combinations of monophonic sequences from polyphonic music data, “overlaying” word locations within a document are obtained, such as needed with polyphon...
متن کاملAn Analysis of Achievement of the Philosophical Sense of “Extension” in Music, with Interpretaion of Ibn-e Sina’s Explanation an Extension
This research can be considered as one of the studies that seek to explore, in an argumentative way, subtle and solid philosophical concepts in the field of art. The paper provides an analysis of the concept of “extension” in music as one of the most thought-provoking philosophical concepts. The analysis is carried out by interpreting Ibn-Sina’s special conception of musical extension to answer...
متن کاملA Polyphonic Music Retrieval System Using N-Grams
This paper describes the development of a polyphonic music retrieval system with the n-gram approach. Musical n-grams are constructed from polyphonic musical performances in MIDI using the pitch and rhythm dimensions of music. These are encoded using text characters enabling the musical words generated to be indexed with existing text search engines. The Lemur Toolkit was adapted for the develo...
متن کاملEmphasizing the Need for TREC-like Collaboration Towards MIR Evaluation
The need for standardized large-scale evaluation of music information retrieval (MIR) and music digital library (MDL) methodologies is being addressed with the recent resolution calling for the construction of the infrastructure necessary to support MIR/MDL research. The methodology of our MIR study investigating the use of n-grams for polyphonic music retrieval has been based on a small-scale ...
متن کاملConventional and periodic N-grams in the transcription of drum sequences
In this paper, we describe a system for transcribing polyphonic drum sequences from an acoustic signal to a symbolic representation. Low-level signal analysis is done with an acoustic model consisting of a Gaussian mixture model and a support vector machine. For higher-level modelling, periodic N-grams are proposed to construct a “language model” for music, based on the repetitive nature of mus...
